Union Institute & University has been providing adults with progressive, alternative educational opportunities since 1964. Based in Cincinnati, Union Institute & University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The university offers a variety of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs including a Master of Arts with a concentration in Counseling Psychology. Union Institute & University operates additional academic centers in Montpelier and Brattleboro, Vermont; Los Angeles and Sacramento, California; and North Miami Beach, Florida. The university employs 400 faculty members worldwide. Due to the nature of the low-residency and online programs that are offered, students of the university have the unique opportunity to work with faculty members who reside in a wide range of communities and often hold either career positions in their field or have distinguished teaching careers at other respected institutions. A few of Union Institute & University's notable faculty members have been honored as "Faces of Distinction." Dr. Nancy Boxill, a member of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners in Atlanta, is program coordinator for the university's pioneering Martin Luther King, Jr., specialization of the Ph.D. program, which focuses on bringing life to Dr. King's civil rights legacy. Dr. Lewis Mehl Madrona, a faculty member in the university's Doctor of Psychology program, is renowned for his work with the growing field of narrative medicine as well as his research on bringing indigenous peoples' healing practices into mainstream medicine. These are just two examples of the outstanding level of educators who work with Union Institute & University to teach students the many ways in which scholarship and theory can be valuable when applied to real-world practice. Union Institute & University is authorized as a degree granting institution in Ohio, California, Florida, and Vermont, and is a member of the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education, the Consortium of Southern California Colleges and Universities, and the Higher Education Partnership of Southeast Florida.
